Anxiety & depression

Anxiety and depression are common and, on the rise, post-COVID. They also have some similar symptoms that can cause intense emotions and discomforts within the body, interrupting life goals and healthy relationships. Having one does not indicate you have the other, but the two can trigger back-and-forth cycles that can become exhausting and overwhelming. Working with a professional trained in the nuances of both anxiety and depression is important to increasing self-awareness and resilience.

Symptoms of anxiety

Anxiety is often described as a general uneasiness within the body, a pit in the gut, a racing heart or a tightness of breath. Common anxiety symptoms include:

  • Frequent irritability
  • Unexplained body pain
  • Sleep problems and frequent fatigue
  • Never feeling quite rested
  • Racing thoughts and frequent worries
  • Feeling on-edge

Symptoms of depression

Depression is different from feeling sad. When sadness lasts for a long time and begins to interrupt everyday life, it may be time to seek out a therapist or talk to your doctor. Common depression symptoms include:

  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  • Feelings of sadness that stay
  • Unexplained body pain
  • Trouble concentrating or making decisions
  • Lack of interest in activities that used to bring joy
  • Thoughts of hurting yourself

Therapy for anxiety and depression

A therapist can differentiate anxiety from depression symptoms. Sessions focus on discovering your specific challenges and concerns to increase resiliency and decrease the impacts of anxiety and depression on your life. Your therapist may work with your doctor to introduce medication into therapy treatment to accelerate relief.
