Seasonal shifts: How to realign

by Shannon Himango, MA, LMFT

As a Marriage and Family Therapist, I speak with many folks regarding their lives, schedules and roles that seemed to have ‘morphed’ into something that feels unmanageable, out of control and a source of much resentment.

As we head into the fall season and all its associated changes, this is a reminder to go back to the drawing board and redesign what works for all involved.

What may have worked in the summer is not necessarily mandated for the new season.  Each change of seasons is a natural time for a reboot!

Reboot for fall

Take time to think about the following questions

  • What brings you joy?
  • What nourishes you?
  • What energizes your spirit?
  • What is important to sustain your well-being?

Intentionality in keeping these activities in place or resuming them if they’ve drifted, is an excellent gift to give yourself. This can include favorite self-care activities, hobbies, time in relationship with your people, or attention to a goal you’ve set for yourself.

The opposite is important as well; similar to pruning a garden for the fall to strengthen the plant itself, trimming away activities and obligations which do not serve you well can aid in strengthening your sense of stability and well-being.  This leaves room for the healthier aspects of life to flourish.

Wishing you a lovely autumn full of what nourishes you!
